Livestock Sector Gets Boost as PS Backs Six Nations Livestock Genetics Expo
The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening partnerships that enhance livestock production, improve farmer incomes, and increase Kenya's competitiveness in regional and international markets.
The assurance came during a meeting with the leadership of Wafugaji Quality Meat Cooperative Society, led by Chairman Henry C. Kioko, who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Six Nations Livestock Genetics & Equipment Expo.
The delegation briefed Mr. Mueke on preparations for the upcoming regional livestock exposition, which is expected to bring together breeders, investors, technology providers, and other key stakeholders from six East African countries.
Speaking after the meeting, Mueke welcomed the initiative and acknowledged the cooperative's role in advancing Kenya's livestock industry.
“It was a pleasure to meet the leadership of Wafugaji Cooperative Society and discuss their vision for transforming Kenya’s livestock sector. The cooperative is making a significant contribution by promoting improved livestock genetics, fodder production, and better market access for cattle, sheep, and goats. I was also pleased to learn about their upcoming Six Nations Livestock Show, which will showcase improved breeds and innovations while bringing together livestock producers and other stakeholders,” said Jonathan Mueke, PS State Department for Livestock Development.
The PS reiterated the government's support for collaborative initiatives aimed at accelerating growth within the sector.
“The State Department for Livestock Development remains committed to supporting partnerships that strengthen livestock production, improve farmer incomes, and enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in local and international markets,” he added.
Scheduled for September 11 and 12 at Kinga Resorts in Athi River, the Six Nations Livestock Genetics & Equipment Expo is designed to promote improved livestock genetics, modern farming technologies, and investment opportunities within the livestock value chain.
According to Mr. Kioko, the event aligns with Kenya's economic development priorities by fostering public-private partnerships, reducing reliance on imported livestock genetics and equipment, and enhancing productivity among smallholder farmers.
It is expected to serve as East Africa's premier livestock exhibition, providing a platform for showcasing superior livestock breeds, innovative equipment, and emerging technologies that can transform livestock production across the region.
The event will also facilitate knowledge exchange, business networking, and investment opportunities while promoting cross-border collaboration among livestock producers, breeders, researchers, policymakers, and agribusiness stakeholders.
Organisers expect the expo to accelerate the adoption of improved genetics and modern production practices, ultimately contributing to increased productivity, food security, and sustainable growth of the livestock sector across East Africa.
