Four Golden Rules Driving Joyce's Cattle Feedlot & Fattening Venture
Today she fattens 400 bulls on a single acre of land! While most people think you need hundreds of acres to make serious money in cattle farming, Joyce is turning the entire agribusiness model on its head right here in Kenya using smart, high-density feed lotting.
Here are the four golden rules driving her success
Buy the Engine Not Just the Cow
Joyce doesn't buy small, young calves to grow slowly. She targets large-framed, lean 3-to-5-year-old bulls with broad rumens (what she calls the animal’s "engine"). Her job isn't growing them—it's supercharging them!

Precision Feeding (The 3% Rule)
Every bull is weighed weekly and fed exactly 3% of its body weight using a custom Total Mixed Ration (TMR) formula—mixing Boma Rhodes hay, maize germ, concentrates, minerals, and home-fermented grass (hage). The result? Bulls packing on up to 14 kg of solid weight in just ONE week!

Zero Compromise on Biosecurity
New stock undergoes a strict 10-day quarantine for deworming, multivitamin boots, and targeted vaccinations before joining the main feedlot.
Stress = Lost Money
Bulls that get bullied by the herd are immediately isolated into private pens. Why? Because stress reduces feed conversion, and every lost kilo is lost profit.
Joyce’s story proves that in modern agribusiness, knowledge and strategy beat acreage every single time.
