Preventing Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Livestock
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, sheep and goats. An outbreak can spread quickly between animals and farms, making prevention and early action important for every livestock keeper.

Report Immediately
If you notice signs that could indicate FMD, notify your County Veterinary Officer, local animal health authorities or a veterinarian immediately. Early reporting helps authorities respond and limit further spread.
Stop Animal Movement
When FMD is suspected, avoid moving animals, vehicles or equipment onto or off the affected farm. Restricting movement can help contain the disease and reduce the risk of spreading it to other farms.
Practise Good Biosecurity
Anyone entering livestock areas should use clean clothing and boots, with disposable protective covers where appropriate. Farmers should also maintain good hygiene around animal housing and equipment.
Clean and Disinfect
Regularly clean and disinfect vehicles, tools, animal housing and other equipment using appropriate approved disinfectants. Remember: clean first, then disinfect.
Protect Your Herd
FMD prevention starts with simple but consistent biosecurity practices. Control movement, maintain cleanliness, follow vaccination guidance, and report suspected cases quickly.
Stay alert. Protect your animals. Help prevent the spread of FMD.
